Embroidery Patterns
Hani embroidery patterns are based on geometric shapes and physical facsimiles. Geometric patterns include squares, diamonds, swirls, triangles, pentagonal patterns, octagonal patterns, checkered patterns, water ripples, houndstooth patterns, ten-thousand character patterns and so on. The physical copy of the shape is inspired by the sun, moon, mountains and rivers, plants and animals. The embroidery patterns are arranged in a sequence of colored threads, either from left to right, top to bottom, or inside to outside.

The wedding dresses of the Hani tribe are usually prepared piece by piece from the age of thirteen after a girl's bar mitzvah, and they are more gorgeous and complicated than the festival dresses. Wedding dresses are embroidered with colorful ornaments, embellished with silver bubbles, and rich and varied patterns, whether it is the continuous “back pattern”, the radiant sun and the moon, or the different forms of ferns and silver fish, which reflect the solemnity of the dress and the good wishes and prayers for the newlyweds.
Hani Girl's Clothing
By changing their costumes, Hani girls symbolize the transition from childhood to youth, announcing that they have grown into young girls. The colorful costumes signify the arrival of youth, symbolizing the most beautiful period of a woman's life, and heralding the vitality of youth and the sweetness of love. As a sign of adulthood, young girls are required to wear a silver chest pocket, wear twelve braids symbolizing the “Twelve Roads of Surge”, and decorate the ends of their hair with “bijia” (tail ornaments). It is said that Nuomei girls who do not wear the “batch of armor” are considered to be uneducated and “wild girls” who do not understand etiquette.
This dress tradition not only shows the Hani tribe's appreciation of women's growth and youth, but also carries strong cultural connotations and social significance. Decorations such as the “batch of armor” are not only symbols of beauty, but also represent the etiquette and identity of the Hani people. At the same time, these costumes and decorations also serve to transmit culture and values in the community, enabling the younger generation to feel the continuity of tradition and a sense of belonging to the culture.
Hani Hat
In order to bless the healthy growth of infants, Hani children's hats are “mother's lapel for the clothes, father's sleeve for the hat”, symbolizing the parents' body and soul shelter, implying the protection of health and wellness and guardianship of the soul. Children's hats are usually sewn with six straight pieces of green and blue cloth, and the tops of the hats are decorated with pig's teeth, sea shells, tiger's (leopard's) teeth, pangolin scales and shells, as well as wild plants such as seeds of grasses and fruits and peppercorns.
